Kitimat River
June 12
Gilles Belzil text me this “Selfie” of this 32 lb Chinook that he caught at the Upper, Lower Dike on Wednesday. Giles is visiting from Fort McMurray, Alberta and been “bitten by the fishing bug”. Hooking and landing a big Chinook will do that to you. Gilles was fishing a Flame spotted Chartreuse #2 Spin n glo and looks pretty happy with his catch. Congratulations Gilles!
June 13
Ted Riel caught this beautiful 32lb Chinook at the Kitimat River Pump House. Ted had been the “Hot Rod” at the Pump House this week. Well done Ted!
Keep the streak alive!
June 13
Todd Haynes from Nautical West Sportfishing reports that his guide Chris, “ hooked up with a great gal and a nice Chinook while fishing the Kitimat River”. Well done Chris! She’s a keeper and the fish is nice too. : )

Jeremy Engelsford landed this 28lb Chinook at the Lower, Lower Dike on Wednesday morning. That morning there were 28 rods in the water and Jeremy was the only Chinook caught on the morning tide. Jeremy was a very lucky angler and also looks like a very, very happy angler!.
June 15
Scott Inglehart holding a Chum he caught at the Kitimat River Pump House. It is a bit early for Chum in the Kitimat River but what it even more significant is that Scott caught a Chum 2 days in a row. Nicely done Scott. I think that Chum when they are fresh make awesome smoked salmon. Bon Appetite!

Travis James caught this 33 lb Chinook on a Fly while fishing with his good friend and Pro Guide of Reliable Guide and Charters, Justin Lowes. Wow! Congratulations Travis!
Well done! Justin and Travis hooked 2 other Chinook but they were so happy that this is the one that they landed. The more difficult the endeavour the more gratifying the reward. Hooking and landing big Chinook is a very challenging endeavour. Once again Congratulations!
Anyone wishing to Book a Drift boat Trip of a Lifetime with Justin, please contact Ron at wakita@telus.net or call 250 632 1275.

Cliff Young from Grande Prairie Alberta caught this beauty on the lower, lower Dike. This Chinook weighed 38 ;bs 7 ounces! Wow! Nicely done!
Cliff was using a Pink Clown #0 Spin N Glo with a pink Gibbs/Delta mini hoochie.
Summary
The Kitimat River early in the week showed signs of our Chinook season progressing very nicely. On Tuesday, the Kitimat River water level dropped and the catch rates also dropped right off.
The lower, lower dike is a prime example of this. On Tuesday there were 9 or 10 Chinook hooked and 7 landed. On Wednesday, there was only one landed in the morning and a small one landed on the evening tide. The lower, lower Dike is one of the most popular “Bar Fishing” runs on the Kitimat River. The lower, lower dike fishes the best when the Kitimat River is high because the Chinook travel the inside where all the Bar Rods are set up. Accordingly, when the river is low the Chinook migrate up the other side and this shows in the numbers of fish being caught. If you are Bar fishing, it is best to wade out and cast into the deeper water.
The Kitimat River is exceptionally low right now and is only going to drop even lower. When the river is this low, the most productive times to fish is early morning and in the evenings.
During the brightness of the afternoon sun, most of the Chinook are being caught in the deeper pools. It appears that we will have low water levels for the majority of this year’s Chinook season so my advice is get up early and fish late into the evening. It will be more productive to fish the deep pools during the day or siesta during the heat of the afternoon sun! As the conditions change, it is always best to just “Go with the Flow”. There are some bigger high tides coming next week…Stay tuned to this report!
Douglas Channel

Summary
The Kitimat Harbour Fishery seems to be a bit spotty this week.
Halibut and Bottomfish is very productive right now especially on the outer waters of the Douglas Channel. The larger Chinook, Coho and Pinks are also being caught in the outer waters.
A 2 or 3 day trip down the Douglas Channel catching Halibut and Salmon during the day and bathing in natural Hot springs in the evenings is an experience every angler should experience.
We are blessed to live in an area with such bountiful fish stocks, incredible scenic beauty and natural hot springs.
