July 31st Aiden McCormick, Staff member at Ron’s Fishing Tackle Shop fishing with his fishing partner, Chris landed this late season Chinook bottom bouncing with the pink version of “Aiden’s Geisha Girl” rig. Aiden is a “Guide in training”. Two qualities a Guide must have are the passion for fishing and the ability to know how to catch fish. I would say Aiden possesses both. The Proof is in the pictures. 🙂

July 30 Gord McKeen, Pro Guide for Reliable Guide and Charters hosted Jeanne and Gilles from Quebec on our Half Driftboat Special 450.00 for 4 hrs. Jeanne hooked and landed her first Kitimat River salmon ever on her first cast. You can’t write a better script than this…. 🙂 Gilles also landed a bunch of Chum and a few Pinks.

SUMMARY
Anglers are reminded that Chinook closed for retention midnight July 31st. This brings the end to a very good Chinook season on the Kitimat River.
Chum were the Rockstars this week as Chum catch rates were exceptional. Bottom bouncing was the method of choice for most anglers fishing for Chum with “Aiden’s Geishas Girl” rig leading the charge. The tend of Chum populations being what Pinks number usually are continues.
Pink jigs were the method as choice for the Pinks. The Kitimat River experienced an influx of Pinks during our last dominant tides but we need more to come to compensate for the Pinks that did not show earlier in the month. Typicallly Pink returns willl continue into August.
Coho numbers are higher than normal this time of year but the main run is not expected to start until late August.

Aug 3 Jane Stevenson and Dean Melo caught 2 halibut, 1 ling cod, 4 coho, 3 chinook and 3 chum fishing down the Douglas Channel over the weekend. Congratulations on your catch. You are “Rock Stars!”

SUMMARY
The Douglas Channel continues to produce all five species of Samon , all species of Bottomfish and lots of Crab and Prawns. This is in my opinion, the Best time to be fishing the Douglas Channel especially for Halibut.
Anyone wishing to check “Halibut” off their bucket list, now is the time.
Coho are starting to be caught in closer to Kitimat and there are still very good number of Chinook being caught. This trend of the last 3 years of some boaters catching more Chinook in Coho season than the did in Chinook season.
My thoughts are, “as long as they are being caught…is a Good thing”. : )
It appears the start of Coho season in the Douglas Channel starts with a bunch Chinook being caught
We are indeed fortunate to enjoy the Stock abundance of the Doulgas Channel.
