Kitimat River

The Kitimat River conditions this week were very similar to the fishing conditions last week.  The week started with the Kitimat River high and dirty and she slowly dropped during the week.  By mid week, the river dropped and cleared enough to be fishable.  There were a few Chinook reported but no photos available for this report.  Thursday and Friday we received some more rain and the Kitimat started to rise and by Saturday she was no longer fishable.
At the time of this report ,Sunday noon (photo below), the Kitimat was just coming back into fishable conditions with 12” visibility.

Summary

This summer’s weather has been similar to the rainy summer we experienced last year. We received a lot of rain last year but lost very few days due to high water levels. This summer we have a larger snow pack to content with in addition to the rainfall. I suspect this week’s rain is melting the lower portions of the snow pack. This is why the river levels have climbed so dramatically with even moderate rain. We have lost more fishing days due to high and dirty water this year to date than all of last year. The forgiving fact is that the Kitimat River drops and cleans exceptionally fast. Smart money says to get out  fishing and catch some Chinook while the conditions are good because conditions could change quickly.  The conditions are difficult but we should be Thankful for the times when the Kitimat has been fishable.  The forecast for next week is for better weather.  Better weather should create better fishing conditions.  Stay tuned.

June 25 Dan Lachapelle fishing with his buddies, Roy and Glen boated a 55,115 and a lb.65 Halibut on their trip. Wow!
They also boated 4 Chinook on their trip while fishing the outer waters of Douglas Channel.

June 29 Andreas Handl reports landing 17 Chinook, 3 Pinks a 17 lb halibut on a 2 day trip limit crab fishing in the Money Point area

June 30 Brad Wickman and his fishing partner, Dumo hooked 3 Chinook landing 2 30lbers fishing in the Bish Creek area.  They also netted their limit of Crab.

Summary
Halibut continues to be the shining star of fishing in the Douglas Channel and Kitimat area.
The Chinook run this year appears to be late.  We are seeing catch rates this week that should have happened 2 or 3 weeks ago.  Better late than not at all!
