Chum are also referred to as “Dogs” because of their canine teeth; Chum have evolved into one the most popular fisheries on the Kitimat River. The Kitimat River Hatchery has produced as many as seven million smolts. Chum start to run the Kitimat River in mid July and will continue into late August in unbelievable numbers.
Chum are an exceptional salmon to catch on fly or light tackle. Chum salmon range in size from 10 to 30 lbs. Flying for Chum is is growing in popularity. Fly Fishers from around the World come to the Kitimat to specifically fish for Chum.
Chum season on the Kitimat River starts from mid July and continues until the end of August.
