Kitimat River

Trout fishing on the Kitimat River has been very good this spring when the weather has been good.  Other than the snow fall on the first day of spring, Mother Nature has provided very good fishing conditions.
I have heard of 2 Steelhead caught on the Kitimat River this past week.  The lucky anglers did not wish to reveal any more details.  I respect their right to privacy but it was very nice to hear that there are a few Steelhead caught.  .

My twin brother, Rick and I had the pleasure of fishing with our cousins, Naomi and Gordon Nishi.  This is Naomi's first fish on the Kitimat River.  It was not the Steelhead we had hoped for but Naomi was very happy.  Congratulations Naomi!
Naomi landed this beauty using a Gibbs float and the Kitimat Combo.  The Kitimat Combo originated with Pat Oliver who was an Associate Guide for Reliable Guide and Charters and a senior Staff in our Tackle store, City Centre Hardware and Sporting Goods.  The Kitimat Combo is a 3" pink artificial Worm from Kermode Tackle or a 3" Pink Berkley Power Bait worm.  Either of these are comboed with a piece of Dew worm from Skeena Bait or Bubba's Bait.

I had the pleasure of donating a Fly casting clinic to the Kitimat Seniors Centre.  We were fortunate to have exceptional weather which provided the atmosphere for everyone to be good spirits.  We had a lot of fun and the caasting improved dramatically from when we started to when we finished. Well done everyone.  It has been my experience that seniors have excellent sense of humours and very quick wit.  One participant said it best,  "I have some regrets of the things that I have done but I have more regrets of the things that I have not done"  She can now cross Fly Casting off of her list.  A Big Thank You to Lisa Fraser for organizing this Casting clinic.
April traditionally is when Steelhead will get better and better with each rising tide.  Many anglers will be taking advantage of the good weather and excellent conditions and accordingly we should to start to hear of more Steelhead reports in the coming days.
For anglers drifting, Mike Herzberg drifted with his Outcast Pac 800 pontoon boat and reports, "The drift went well. No obstructions from Sawmill to Pumphouse. Only one problem area, that being about 1/4 mile below the old Crown Bridge. The river splits right below the bridge piling. I took the right channel. I was able to make it through okay, but that channel gets really narrow (20 feet) and piles into a small logjam. A driftboat would best be walked through." A huge Thank You to Mike for the update.
The weather foecast is excellent and many anglers have purchased or renewed their Fishing Licenses for this year's fishing season. There will be many anglers looking for their first Steelhead this weekend. Good Luck to everyone. Please do not forget to renew your licenses

Wes Owen and I took my cousins Naomi and Gordon out in the Kitimat Harbour to do a little Winter Chinook fishing and some crabbing.  We did not catch any Winter Chinook but were able to catch a few crab during our morning outing.  Crabbing is a joy when using "Brutas", Ace Line Haulers crab puller.  These crab were the first of the year.  They were delicious.  Bon Appetite!
The main Herring spawn in the Douglas Channel appears to be finished for this year. I am pleased to report that there was an excellent showing of herring this year. Usually when the herring season is very good the fishing for all other species is also very good. Time will tell. Stay tuned!
Many Saltwater anglers and boaters are/will be taking advantage of the wonderful weather and heading down the Douglas Channel. Many are Crabbing for Dungeness and also for King Crab. Rob from Kitimaat Village reports catching 3 on his last outing. Other King Crab reports varied from none to a few.  Dungeness has be very good especially further down channel.
Halibut and bottom fish will also be the target for boaters.  There have been reports of a few caught but nothing big yet.
Please don't forget to renew your Fishing Licenses.
The Northwest Community College is putting on a Marine First Course April 14 & 15 th.  They are looking for a few more participants.  Anyone interested please Contact Eleanor 250 638 5473
