KITIMAT RIVER: The Kitimat River Chinook fishery early this week started off smoking hot highlighted by Jesse Houston's 62lb Chinook caught last weekend. There were really good numbers of Chinook caught early in the week during the large high tides and the high water. Progressing into the latter part of the week with the Kitimat River dropping and the high tides diminishing to lower heights, the Chinook catch numbers dropped off. There were more Chinook caught mostly on the afternoon and evening high tides whereas during the higher river levels, Chinook were caught throughout the day.
 June 13 My son Corey and I did an afternoon drift today and we landed a 12lb Chinook. Although the Chinook is not very big, the significance of this Chinook was that it was the first Chinook that was hooked while my son Corey was rowing the Driftboat. Corey has been learning to row the Driftboat for the past 3 years and we have hooked Steelhead and Coho with Corey on the oars but this is our first Chinook. The agreement we have is that if Corey is on the oars when a fish is hooked, I have to call him "Captain Corey". Captain Corey rowed from Cable Car to Radley Park and he just turned 16. It was indeed a proud father moment in my life. In addition to the birth of my first Grandson, Chase, June is evolving into an exceptional month for me personally. Well done Captain Corey, Brandon and Justine!
  June 13 Ariel Kuppers and Jesse Houston drifted the Kitimat Sunday evening. They hooked 3 Chinook and landed a 35lb and a 47lb Chinook. They were using Luhr Jensen Kwik fish. Congratulations Jesse and Ariel these are very nice fish.
  June 14 Mike Herzberg drifted the Kitimat River by himself. Mike landed 4 Chinook. One was a Jack Chinook and the others ranged between 15 to 23lbs. Mike was hotshotting from his 16 foot ClackaCraft driftboat with Luhr Jensen Kwikfish. When the rod would go off, Mike would set the hook and then put the rod holder with the fish on and roll to shore keeping the line tight using the oars. Once Mike reached shore, he would drop the anchor, jump out of the boat and land the Chinook. With the Chinook laying in a couple inches of water, Mike would push the timer button on his camera, run to the Chinook and hold it up for the photo. To land 4 Chinook between 10 and 23lbs using this technique is amazing. Even more amazing is that these are pretty good pictures!
  June 15 Mike Herzberg of Reliable Guide and Charters continues his pursuit of Big Kitimat River Chinook with his fishing partner Gord. Mike and Gord hooked 3 Chinook and landed a 15lb and a 25lb Chinook with Mike's favorite Luhr Jensen Kwik Fish. Mike was the first on the Kitimat River to perfect the "Scar Face technique" and the proof is in his results.   Photo of the Week June 16 I had the pleasure of fishing with my very good friends, Noel Gyger and Mike Herzberg in Mike's ClackaCraft driftboat. We hooked 4 Chinook and landed a 32lb and an 18lb. We were using Luhr Jensen KwikFish and we had an awesome time fishing together. We have all known each other for many years but we could count the times that we drifted together on one hand. We all agreed that "fishing trips together will not happen unless we make them happen". We agreed to fish together next week in my driftboat. Thank You to Mike for hosting this morning's drift in his boat and Thank You to you both for a Great trip with Great friends!
 June 16 James Wright reports landing a 30lbs plus Chinook upriver using a Gibbs Float and a Luhr Jensen Gooey Bob.Nice Fish James! Congratulations!
 June 18 Ariel Kuppers fished with our clients Bill Gibson and his sons Matt and Josh. They hooked 5 Chinook and landed a 23lb Chinook with a Luhr Jensen KwikFish. Josh landed the 23lb Chinook and owned the bragging rights in the Gibson family. Josh was wearing his "Lucky" hat when he landed the Chinook and explained the importance of his Lucky hat to his brother Matt and father Bill. Congratulations Josh!  June 19 Mike Herzberg drifted with his friend Lara. They landed a very bright 23lb Chinook on a Luhr Jensen KwikFish on a beautiful day on the Kitimat River. To catch a bright Chinook on a day with blue sky, clean water and sunny hot weather is an event every angler should experience. Congratulations to Mike and Lara.
 June 19 I had the pleasure of fishing with Marc and Bonnie Girard. Marc is an associate guide for Reliable guide and Charters. We seldom get to fish together because we are usually very busy in Chinook season. Due to the downturn in the economy we have fewer bookings. We seized the opportunity to spend some time fishing the Kitimat together. We landed a 63cm Jack Chinook in the first 5 minutes. Anglers are reminded that the retention quota for Chinook measuring between 30 and 65cm is 4. Only one Chinook over 65cms may be retained and must be recorded on the back of the fishing license. The total daily quota for Chinook is 4 and only 1 over 65cms. We lost another big Chinook on our drift. We had a wonderful time. Thank You to Bonnie and Marc for an awesome afternoon on the Kitimat River.
  June 20 Mike Herzberg was fishing with his good friends Alvaro and Steve and they hooked 5 chinook and landed 3. They landed a 22lb Chinook, a 25lb Chinook and a 70cm Jack Chinook drifting in Mike's Clakacraft driftboat and all these Chinook were hooked on Luhr Jensen KwikFish. Mike released the 25lb Chinook. Well done guys. Congratulations on some very nice Chinook!
 June 20. Manny Aruda fishing with his other favorite brother in-law landed a 28lb and 31lb Chinook drifting the lower Kitimat in Manny's new Crakercraft driftrboat. Wow! Congratualtions Manny! You seem to have excellent fishing results whe you fish with your brother in-laws.
  June 20 I had a rewarding and fullfilling experience fishing with my 2 sons on Father's Day. We did an afternoon drift and "Captain Corey" was on the oars when I set the hook and landed a 24lb Chinook. Brandon chased it down stream and netted this beauty! Brandon took his turn on the oars and we hooked another Chinook which I lost. Although the Chinook was lost, Brandon earned the status of "Captain Brandon" in accordance to our family agreement. We only landed one Chinook on our drift but this Chinook of the best Father's Day present a Father could wish for. Thank You to "Captain Brandon" and "Captain Corey" for a very, very Special Father's Day!
Summary: Catch rates for Chinook on the Kitimat River will continue to increase well into July. The June Chinook fishing has had some outstanding results to date and we are looking forward to reporting exceptional Chinook fishing in the coming weeks. The Lower Dike, Hatchery Island and the Pump House are more popular Fishing Holes in the Lower Kitimat River that are producing Chinook. Most Chinook anglers fishing the lower Kitimat River are "Bar Fishing" with a Yakama Bait Spin N Glo comboed with a Gibbs/Delta mini hoochie. They are also bottom bouncing with a Gibbs Koho 65 Blue Scale spoon. The tides are an important consideration when fishing the lower Kitimat. DOUGLAS CHANNEL: June 15 Albert Nelson reports boating 5 Chinook on the weekend. The largest was 35lbs,
  June 15 Dianne and Brian Fulsom report, "Attached is the photo of the 25 pound spring we caught yesterday (June 15). We caught it near the Clio Lighthouse at 50 feet on an anchovy. Thought you might enjoy the photo of me with the Alaska King crab taken on a previous trip. It was nice talking to you and congratulations to Brandon and family". June 20 Rick Rottluff, the skipper for the Anna Christine reports 9 Halibut, 10 Chinook and 3 Coho on their last trip to the outer waters of the Douglas Channel. Wow! Congratulations!
The Douglas Channel is producing Halibut, Chinook and early signs of Coho on the outer waters. The weather has been exceptional and there are Salmon and bottomfish that are plentiful on the Douglas Channel. We are indeed fortunate to be able to enjoy the stock abundance of the Douglas Channel.
