KITIMAT RIVER:

The Kitimat River is in excellent shape for winter fishing.  The warmer temperatures and rain from the last few weeks has melted the snow along the water's edge exposing enough gravel to ensure good footing. The river levels are low and the water clarity is excellent.  The morning frost is just cold enough to create a hard surface top layer of snow to walk into and along the fishing holes.  This week's sunny and clear weather has provided many anglers excellent Trout and Steelhead fishing on the Kitimat River.

Jan 19 Justin Lowes and Travis James were out fishing the Upper Kitimat on Tuesday.

Justin Lowes landed one 19" Dolly Varden and Travis lost 2 other Trout that he thought were Cutthroat.

Jan 22 Jason Bunn reports catching 2 Cutthroat Trout with his Fly rod.  He was using a Black Egg Sucking Leech.

Jan 23 Travis James landed a very nice Hatchery Rainbow Trout fishing the upper Kitimat.  Travis was Float fishing a 3" Pink Worm. Travis only landed the one Rainbow but reports that he lost a few more.

Jan 23 Rick Taylor reports landing 3 Steelhead and 2 Cutthroat Trout in the Upper Kitimat.  Rick said, "I could see the Steelhead and Trout moving around the pool.  I was sight fishing for most of the Steelhead and Trout that I landed”. Wow 3 Steelhead!  Well done Rick and Congratulations on a great day of fishing!

Jan 23 Jesse Houston fishing one of the tributaries of the Kitimat landed a 20" Steelhead. Congratulations Jesse!

Jan 23 Jason Bunn and Phil Thom hooked into approximately 30 various Trout and one small Steelhead.  Phil and Jason were fishing with Fly Rods as well as Float Fishing with Berkley's Power Bait 3" Trout Worms. Well done Jason and Phil!  Congratulations on a "Great Day of winter fishing".

Jan 24th Travis James was fishing with my son Brandon up at the 16 Mile Bridge.  Travis landed a pretty nice Dolly Varden using the 3" Worm combined with a piece of Dew Worm.

Summary: The warmer weather and excellent river conditions have encouraged many anglers to fish the Kitimat River. Many anglers in the North West are always anxious get out fishing especially when the conditions are as good as they were this week.

Many anglers are gearing up to fish on their days off this week and if "Mother Nature" co-operates with some continued nice weather the good Trout and Steelhead results will also continue.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: The weather for Winter Chinook fishing in the Douglas Channel was excellent this week. Chris Lévesque reports watching a pod of Killer Whales right in front of Eurocan Dock on Thursday and Friday.  He noticed a couple of boats trolling on Thursday but they left after the Killer Whales showed up.  Just when the weather conditions for Winter Chinook fishing were perfect and the Winter Chinook started to group up in the Kitimat Harbour,  Mother Nature throws us curve with the Killer Whales coming into the harbour and scattering the fish.  "Such is life in the Fishing World".  Stay Tuned!

Thank You to everyone for providing photos and info for this Fishing Report.

Good Health! Good Fishing!

Sincerely
Ron Wakita
