KITIMAT RIVER:

Blue Sky! Sunshine! Clean Water!  We have been receiving unbelievable weather this past week especially compared to the weather of a month ago when we were getting ice rain, sub zero temperatures and the river was frozen. Many anglers are happy to be out on the river enjoying the sunshine and catching some fish while others are just happy to be outside.

Feb 14 Ariel Kuppers was fishing with Trent Vines.  They landed 3 Cutthroat in the lower Kitimat River float fishing a Ruby Red 3" rubber worm with a piece of Bubba's Bait's Dew worm.  This is a variation of the Kitimat Combo that Pat Oliver originated a few years ago.  Pat's Kitimat Combo was a Pink 3" worm with a piece of Dew worm.  Pat Oliver and Ariel Kuppers were very good friends and fishing partners.   They were also Associate Guides for Reliable Guide and Charters and they both love to fish every species that swim the Kitimat River.  Pat has moved to the lower mainland, but the legacy of his Kitimat Combo fishes on.

Feb 15 Trent Vines was speaking to an angler who had just finished drifting the lower Kitimat in his pontoon boat.  Trent didn't get the anglers name but the angler said," that he landed 2 Steelhead, one 12lb and a 16lb Steelhead"  The angler was hotshotting from his pontoon boat.  Thank You to Trent for the info and Congratulations to the unnamed angler.

Feb 16 Ariel Kuppers, Trent Vines and Travis James landed 3 Dolly Varden on the lower Kitimat River on Tuesday.  They were all fly fishing.  The most productive fly was a minnow pattern.

With the wonderful weather many anglers have been out fishing the Kitimat River.  The river is exceptionally low and clean and many anglers have reported that they have been able to see the fish but they were unable to catch them.  Ariel Kuppers reports that he had the best results just before dark and other anglers reported having better success in the deeper pools.

The weather is awesome!  The conditions are great!  There are lots of fish being caught!  Life in the Fishing world in Kitimat is Good.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:   The Killer Whales have been sighted in the Kitimat Harbour a few times this week.  The signs of Herring migrating into harbour have been evident for the past few weeks.  The Seagulls and Eagles have been showing up in larger numbers to feed on the Herring.  The Winter Chinook have also migrated into the harbour to feed on the Herring.  The Seals and Sea Lions are also grouping in larger numbers to feed on the Herring and Winter Chinook.  Now the Killer Whales are feeding on the Herring, Winter Chinook and the Seals.  Such is the natural evolution of the food chain in the Kitimat Harbour this time of year.

This is the theory part of the program, except Saltwater anglers have not been reporting a lot of Winter Chinook caught this week.  Some have geared up with Herring Jigs to catch some Herring while others are happy to catch Crab which is always a welcome treat in the Spring after a long winter without them.

Either way, all boaters who have ventured out have marveled at the wonderful weather and the spectacular sight of the Killer Whales.
Stay Tuned!

Thank You to everyone who has provided info or photos for this Fishing Report.
