Marc Girard a Pro Guide for Reliable Guide and Charters and his fishing partner, Erin Ziebart caught this beautiful bright Kitimat River Chinook.  They caught this 25lb beauty on a Metallic Pink Luhr Jensen 3/4 SE Mag Hot Shot.
It was a beautiful day and Erin had just remarked that drifting the Kitimat River was a peaceful serene experience that could only be described as a peace of heaven.  Then there was a violent tug on one of the rods followed by the rod doubling right over and line peeling off the reel.  Marc jumped up.  Set the hook and “Fish On”.   As we can all see in the photo, Marc and Erin can give praise to the Lord for the bounties of their efforts.  Congratulations Marc and Erin.  Well done and Amen!
Anyone wishing to book a Driftboat trip of a Lifetime with Marc, please contact Ron wakita@telus.net or call 250 632 1275.

Justin Lowes Pro Guide for Reliable Guide and Charters was fishing with his buddy Paul Johnson and doing some personal fishing when he caught this 24lb Kitimat River Chinook.  Justin was casting a Gibbs/Delta Koho 65 Green Scale spoon.
Justin hooked this chrome chinook on his third cast!  Wow!  Gotta love when that happens!   Congratulations Justin!  Well done!  Thank You to Paul for taking the picture and capturing the moment!
The Green Scale and Blue Scale Koho 65 Spoons are the most productive casting spoons for Chinook on the Kitimat River and has been for many years.  The proof is in the picture!

Summary
We are going through some big tides right now and we received some rain which bumped up the river height.  This caused a few Chinook to migrate into the Kitimat River to the delight of some very happy anglers.   As we progress through these big tides, more and more Chinook will move into the Kitimat River.  There is an excitement building amongst the Chinook anglers on the Kitimat River.

Kevin Thorne reports, “Bottom fishing was some of the best I’ve seen. We released a few large yellow eye in the 20s and kept a few of the smaller ones. New regs on yellow eye and a pretty vulnerable species so we try to go easy on them. Had a blast with some ling COD in the 20-30 pound range, The rule on my boat is lingers over 30 lbs. go back as the bigger ones r usually the spawning females, same as Hallies.  My personal favourite bottom fish are ling COD. They r so aggressive and put up a great fight. basically stopped fishing because we had to save room for salmon and I don’t like being to greedy.  Chinook fishing was a little slow for the first couple days with a descent feeder here and there. On day 3 our last day we finally got into some mature Kitimat fish. We ended up getting 5 chinooks in the 20-25 pound range that all seemed to be destined for the “kitty”. Fingers crossed they start piling in now. It’s that time of year.  I had the kids out the week before and we had some excellent weather. We went out for 2 nights. Kids loved every minute of it. We got into some great chinook feeders in the 10-15 pound range but couldn’t find the big guys yet. We had some awesome Halli fishing. Once again sorry about the pics these r off the phone and most of my pictures r taken with my GoPro.”
A huge Thank You to Kevin for sharing the pictures and the details of his trips.  Congratulations for some amazing fishing.  I especially admire your rules to release the larger Ling Cod and Halibut.  It is refreshing to hear about your ethics and that you were rewarded for your respect of the resource with a bountiful catch.  Good for you!

Summary
The outer waters of the Douglas Channel are starting to catch more larger Chinook.  Halibut and Bottomfishing remains very good.  There have been a few Coho reported to be caught in the outer waters as well.  The Kitimat Harbour fishery is still a bit spotty but will only get better with every tide.
I am uniquely positioned to access the catch rates of Chinook from the outer waters of the Douglas Channel,  the Kitimat Harbour fishery, the Lower Tidal portion of the Kitimat and the catch rates in the entire Kitimat River.   The readers who have been following this report will have observed that these catch rates follow the migration of the Kitimat River Chinook from the outer water of the Douglas Channel to the Spawning beds of the Kitimat River.  The Kitimat River Chinook are identified by the clipped adipose fin. We have observed over the years that the Kitimat Hatchery, timing, tides, weather and river conditions have major influences on the behaviour patterns of the Kitimat River Chinook.  As the Chinook stocks get closer and larger, there is an excitement building.  I Love Chinook season!
The Bounties of the Sea and the generosity of the human spirit.  We are indeed blessed to live in an area where we can enjoy the plentiful abundance fish stocks available to us.  I am very proud to post the offerings of the Charter operators who are willing to donate proceeds of their Guide/Charter trips to the unfortunate people of Fort McMurray.
