Kitimat River

June 6 PHOTO OF THE WEEK: Marc Girard holding a Chinook he landed on the fly show here.  This is an Intruder style fly weighted with a nickel barbell for eyes.  Well done Marc.  Tight lines!

June 9 Photo taken 7:45 AM.  It rained over night and the river level came up 2′ this morning.  It is pretty dirty.  One angler said he watched a chinook lost earlier before the river turned to brown.

June 10 Jose Da Costa landed this 20lb.Kitimat River Chinook bar fishing at the Pump house.  Ed Abreau is holding Jose’s fish for the photo.  Jose always catches his first Chinook on his birthday which is June 20th.  I guess his birthday present came early this year.  Happy Birthday Jose! As you can see in the photo, the river level has dropped and cleaned up.

June 11 Gus Horianopoulos landed this 24lb Chinook 4:30 Am in the morning.  First Chinook of the year!  Early to bed, early to rise and catch a Chinook.  That was the plan this morning.  Gotta love when a plan comes together. 🙂

June 11 Tyler Pitt from Vernon landed this 30lb  Kitimat River Chinook bar fishing at the Big Spruce run on the lower Kitimat River.  His father Terri also landed one as well.  I am assuming that Tyler’s fish was bigger because I didn’t receive a picture of Terri’s.  Just kiddin!  I am sure that Terri is a proud Father!
Congratulations to the both of you!

Summary

The Kitimat River was clean early in the week but came up due to rain and was dirty by Thursday.  It dropped and cleaned up Friday morning.  There were  a few Chinook caught through out the week except for Friday.
Most of the hardcore anglers are saying, “that there more Chinook caught early in the season last year than this year”.  I agree but our snow pack was smaller last year and it was all melted by May last year.
We still have a fair amount of snow pack left on the mountains but the Chinook are starting to come now.  There are more Chinook being caught every day and even more have been seen rolling.  Stay tuned!
I think we are going to have a good year!

Kitimat Tide Line Fishery

June 11 Chris Thompson, associate guide fo Nautical West Sportfishing is holding a bright 12lb Chinook he caught fishing the tidal portion of the Kitimat River.   Chris was fishing with Todd, owner of Nautical West who is holding the other fish.  They hooked 5 chinook and landed 3.
They were doing a pre-client fishing trip prior to the season.  I call these Homework trips to get dialed to the hot spots in preparations for Booked trips with clients.  Well done Guys a sign of true professionals!

Summary

Halibut in the Douglas Channel is exceptional right now and it looks like it is going be a good Halibut season.  Anyone who has  “catching a Big Halibut on their Bucket List”, this may be your year.
Chinook are starting to get caught closer to the terminal area of the Kitimat River.  There have been reports of Chinook caught at Money Point, Sue Channel and Jesse Falls as they migrate towards the Kitimat Harbour.  The Kitimat Harbour Fishery for big Chinook is as good as gets when it is happening.  Stay tuned!
