Kitimat River
The Kitimat River was in excellent fishing condition this week but unfortunately the Chinook run is still in it’s early stages. There has been a few Chinook caught…. just enough fish to fuel the enthusiasm of a few hard core Chinook anglers. Early in the Chinook season on the Kitimat River, the most popular method is “Bar Fishing” the pools along the lower portion below Haisla Bridge. The most popular pools are the Pump House and the Lower Dike. Over the years Bar Fishing at the Pump House has become a social gathering as much as it is a fishing trip. The same group usually gets to together in the morning and evenings to fish and debate all the usually worldy issues such as politics, religion, work, world peace etc…The discussions are interrupted by a fish and fun is had by all.

Justin Lowes who is an Associate guide for Reliable Guide and Charters was doing a “Homework Drift” last Sunday. These “Homework Drifts” are research drifts we do prior to our Client Guide trips so that we are already dialed to the best holes before we take out our clients. I believe this an important component to being a true Professional Guide. Justin reports landing a 15lb Chinook on his drift. He also reports landing a dozen bright Cutthroat Trout. Well done Justin! Thank You for your professionalism.

Larry Wesolowsky of Nautical West Sportfishing reports, “Randy and Josh, a father and son team, out for a new adventure in the Douglas Channel. They caught 4 halibut and 2 keeper Chinook. They had a blast catching lots of small Chinook”. Congratulations to everyone! Well done! Great Job Larry! I am sure there were some memorable Father/Son moments on this trip that will be shared with the rest of the family when Randy and Josh get home. One of the best parts of the Fishing Experience are telling the “Fish stories’ during the Fish dinners and/or Barbecues when these delicious Halibut and Salmon are enjoyed.
Anyone interested in creating some memorable moments and some delicious meals to be shared with your loved ones please contact Ron wakita@telus.net or call 250 632 1275.
Summary
The outer waters of the Douglas Channel is producing lots of smaller (feeder) Chinooks with the numbers of the larger Chinook (spawners) starting to climb. The Halibut and Bottomfishing is good and the Crabbing is excellent.
The Kitimat Harbour Chinook fishery is still spotty but will be receiving larger tides in the upcoming weeks which usually produces higher catch rates.

Dave Payjack of Sea West Fishing Charters out of Prince Rupert reports:.
“With one of our boats just re-powered for this season by Sea Sport Marine. It was time to get it out to break in the new engines.
I was lucky enough to have my wife Jodie Payjack and good friend James Jensen onboard for the day.
The boat performed so well with its new Yamaha power that there was some time to bring out the jigging gear to test out some new jigs.
Turned out my hand poured jigs were a success as we hooked 7 nice sized ling cod landing 5, we continued our drifts behind the rocks landing 3 snapper 11 other rockfish and out into the flats landing 2 halibut. Not bad when you can get it all done I the same area!
On the way back in we pulled the traps to assess this seasons crab fishing and hauled up 15 keeper crabs. Wow! our little boat ride turned into a smorgasbord!”
